"Victorian Psycho" Trailer: Maika Monroe as a Bloodthirsty Governess

The period slasher, which premiered in Cannes' Un Certain Regard section, opens in theaters in September. Directed by Zachary Wigon, the film pairs Monroe with Thomasin McKenzie, Ruth Wilson, and Jason Isaacs.

Maika Monroe looks chillingly bloodthirsty in the new trailer for 'Victorian Psycho,' adapted from Virginia Feito's novel of the same name. The film was directed by Zachary Wigon and produced by the team behind 'Longlegs,' which cemented Monroe's status as a 'scream queen'; Feito also wrote the screenplay.

The synopsis reads: In 1858, a strange young governess named Winifred Notty (Monroe) arrives at an isolated gothic manor, Ensor House, in Victorian England. Winifred's unsettling charm conceals a deadly secret. Household staff begin disappearing one by one, strange occurrences become impossible to ignore, and as Winifred spirals into madness, her increasingly savage acts shatter the manor's calm.

The cast also includes Thomasin McKenzie, Evie Templeton, Ruth Wilson, and Jason Isaacs. The project had a long road to the screen: the role was originally set for Margaret Qualley, who departed in May 2025, with Monroe stepping in. Filming began in Ireland in August 2025, with Bleecker Street handling U.S. distribution.

In her first promotional interview for the film, Monroe told THR: "It terrified me. I knew it would be the toughest role I'd ever played — and incredibly different from anything I'd done before." The film opens in September.
