Awards Season Slides to 2027: From Denzel Washington to Joel Coen, Anticipated Films Line Up

Don't believe every Oscar list you read. As the fall festivals finalize their lineups and studios lock in their year-end release plans, it's looking increasingly unlikely that several high-profile films many had penciled into the 2026 awards race will actually arrive this year. Some have slid to 2027, some are still searching for a distributor, and others simply need a bit more time on the editing table.

None of this is a judgment on the quality of the work. In an ecosystem that increasingly rewards a clean runway and a well-timed festival launch, holding a film back is often the smarter move; a crowded calendar can force even a strong contender to wait its turn.

"Saturn Return" (Netflix)

Following the Oscar-nominated "Sing Sing," Greg Kwedar's new film is a love story set in Chicago that unfolds across two timelines, following a decade in the lives of three college friends. Charles Melton, Rachel Brosnahan, and Will Poulter star, with Plan B producing. Expected this year, the film may be aiming for a premiere at SXSW in March, the festival that introduced "Everything Everywhere All at Once."

"Here Comes the Flood" (Netflix)

From "City of God" and "The Two Popes" director Fernando Meirelles comes an unconventional heist thriller based on a Simon Kinberg screenplay: a bank security guard, a teller, and a master thief caught in a deadly game told through a non-linear narrative. Denzel Washington leads a cast that also includes Robert Pattinson, Daisy Edgar-Jones, Danai Gurira, and Sean Harris. Filming in New Jersey ran through the end of January, and with a tight post-production window, the film is expected to land in 2027.

"The Riders" (A24)

After "Conclave" and "All Quiet on the Western Front," Edward Berger teams up with Brad Pitt for a psychological thriller adapted by David Kajganich from Tim Winton's 1994 novel. The cast also includes Julianne Nicholson, Danny Huston, and Camille Cottin. With European filming starting in early 2026, the film is pointing toward 2027.

In short, this season's lists are far from set in stone: the picture will become clearer after Venice, Telluride, and Toronto.
