Subnautica 2 Sells 2 Million Copies in 12 Hours
After a bruising legal fight between Krafton and Unknown Worlds' founders, the early access survival sequel became one of 2026's biggest PC launches.

Subnautica 2 reached 2 million copies in just 12 hours after its early access launch, following a first million sold in roughly one hour. Peak concurrent players across Steam, the Epic Games Store and Xbox passed 651,000, with Steam alone topping 467,000 — around nine times the all-time peak of the original Subnautica.

The numbers land after a turbulent year. In 2025, publisher Krafton removed the leadership of developer Unknown Worlds, and the dispute went to court amid accusations that the launch was being delayed to avoid a large earn-out payment. In March 2026, a judge ordered former CEO Ted Gill reinstated, and Krafton then confirmed the May early access date.
Why it matters for PC players
The original Subnautica grew from a modest 2014 early access debut into a celebrated 1.0 release in 2018, shaped heavily by community feedback. The sequel follows the same route — but this time with co-op, a bigger opening slice and a far larger audience from day one. It had been Steam's most-wishlisted game, with more than 5 million wishlists before launch.
For anyone building a 2026 PC library, Subnautica 2 is already one of the year's essential survival games — even with years of early access development still ahead.
