Letterboxd, beloved by film fans as "the Goodreads of cinema," may be headed under the umbrella of a major entertainment company. According to a report from The Information, the film-criticism social network is in early-stage talks with multiple potential buyers, including Netflix, Sony Pictures Entertainment, Paramount, and Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian.
The New Zealand-based platform sold a $50 million minority stake to American private equity firm Tiny in late 2024, a deal that valued the company at more than $100 million. Now, offers for the entire company are reportedly coming in well above that figure. Letterboxd's monthly active user base has surpassed 15 million as of 2026; the platform has become a cultural touchstone, particularly among Gen Z and young millennial moviegoers.
Studios' interest isn't a coincidence: Letterboxd data is increasingly used as a reliable barometer for a film's opening-weekend audience perception. For Netflix, the platform could serve as both a discovery tool and a content marketing vehicle. Paramount, meanwhile, is ramping up its "reinvesting in film culture" messaging under new CEO David Ellison. The talks are not yet finalized; a Letterboxd spokesperson declined to comment.
