'Obsession' Crosses $400 Million Globally: A Phenomenon Born From a $750,000 Production

'Obsession,' which Focus Features acquired for $14 million at last year's Toronto Film Festival, has surpassed $400 million at the global box office. In its first two months in theaters, the film reached a total gross of $403 million, with $245 million coming from North America and $157 million from international markets. Made for just $750,000, the film is rapidly becoming the most profitable cinema story of the year.

Directed by YouTuber Curry Barker, the film maintained its momentum even into its eighth week in theaters. Over the July 4th long weekend, it added $5.3 million domestically and $12 million internationally. With its North American total approaching the $250 million mark, 'Obsession' has climbed to a level rarely reached by art house or independent films in the post-pandemic era.

The most striking development has been the film's box office trajectory: after a $17 million opening, its grosses actually grew for four consecutive weekends, each outperforming the opening weekend. The story, which follows Michael Johnston's desperate romantic, Bear, as he strikes a Faustian bargain in pursuit of Nikki (Inde Navarrette), the woman he loves, turned into a genuine cultural wave thanks to strong word of mouth and, in particular, Gen Z's enthusiasm.

The success of 'Obsession,' alongside Kane Parsons's A24 production 'Backrooms' (which has grossed $347 million to date), has upended the notion that young audiences are indifferent to movie theaters. Jason Blum, who produced both films under the Blumhouse-Atomic Monster banner, told Variety, "There's a new generation of moviegoers who have developed a real taste for offbeat horror films. That's genuine growth territory for the theatrical business model." Proving that the TikTok generation hasn't abandoned the big screen, 'Obsession' is going down in cinema history as 2026's surprise box office story.
