Robert Downey Jr. Reacts to Ryan Gosling Joining the MCU: "Let Them Be a Motorcycle and Sidecar"

Ryan Gosling is joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe — and Robert Downey Jr. already has a crossover idea.

The 'Iron Man' star spoke to Entertainment Weekly following Marvel Studios' panel at San Diego Comic-Con, sharing his thoughts on the 'La La Land' actor's superhero debut. "I want him and Nic together, Spider-Noir coming back; let them be like a motorcycle and sidecar," Downey said.

The "Nic" Downey is referring to is Nicolas Cage: Cage recently played Ben Reilly in Prime Video's 'Spider-Noir' series and previously played Johnny Blaze in the 2007 'Ghost Rider' film and its 2011 sequel. Coincidentally, in that first film, Johnny's girlfriend Roxanne was played by Eva Mendes, Gosling's longtime partner.

Gosling's casting was announced during Saturday night's Marvel panel in Hall H, with the actor present on stage as the news broke. "As you know, this is a character I've wanted to play for a long time," Gosling said. The film will be directed by Shawn Levy, who directed 'Deadpool & Wolverine' and previously directed Gosling in 'Star Wars: Starfighter.' Levy told the panel, "We can all agree Gosling is a legend," adding, "Let's rev the engines — see you in 2028."

In the same interview, Downey compared his new villain, Victor Von Doom, to Tony Stark: "They're both considered brilliant scientists, but Tony had a trauma that turned him into a hero, whereas Doom had the opposite." 'Avengers: Doomsday' opens December 18; Gosling's 'Ghost Rider' arrives in 2028.
