Jenna Ortega's Sister Reacts to the Backlash Over the Actress's Appearance

Following a wave of online commentary about Jenna Ortega's health and body, the actress's younger sister has joined those coming to her defense.

On Wednesday, a fan of the Emmy-nominated actress posted on Instagram telling people to "mind their own business and leave @jennaortega alone, especially after her latest interview generated so many questions and assumptions about her health."

The fan's comments were a response to the online backlash sparked by Ortega's appearance in a video interview for Esquire, with many fans claiming the actress appeared noticeably thinner and drawing comparisons with older videos and photos.

"She doesn't owe anyone an explanation; her life is her life and her body is hers," wrote the fan, Amrita Singh, in a lengthy post. "She has the right to make decisions she believes are best for herself without being judged, discriminated against, or subjected to unnecessary speculation. We don't know what she's going through, and we shouldn't make assumptions based on her appearance or a few sentences in an interview. Sometimes the most respectful thing we can do is give someone privacy, support them, and let them be."

"For God's sake, she was a human being before she was a celebrity, and that's exactly what people forget. She deserves privacy, peace, and the freedom to live without constant scrutiny. Stop obsessing over her personal life and let her live on her own terms," she added.

Ortega's sister, Aliyah Ortega, commented "!!!" on the post, implying she agreed with the fan's perspective, without adding any further comment.

The Wednesday star isn't the only celebrity dealing with online commentary about her body. Ariana Grande faced a similar backlash, particularly after the release of her "Petal" video. This month, it was announced that after completing her Eternal Sunshine Tour, Grande would be "taking a step back from visibility" and "taking a well-deserved break from public-facing work that has led to endless public scrutiny." The singer later said the decision was "not reactive or sudden, but something she'd quietly planned a long time ago."

Ortega is currently filming the third season of Wednesday for Netflix, after which she'll head out on a press tour for the dystopian sci-fi adaptation Klara and the Sun, set to hit theaters October 23.
