"They Follow": David Robert Mitchell Confirms a Vital Collaborator Is Returning for the "It Follows" Sequel

More than a decade has passed since David Robert Mitchell unleashed It Follows upon the world. And fittingly for the film, it's been a horror that has followed us ever since: the idea of a sexually transmitted death curse and a being that never stops pursuing you, wrapped in the director's eerie storytelling.

We've known for a while that the sequel, titled They Follow, is on the way and that Maika Monroe will return as Jay. While preparing for this summer's dinosaur blockbuster The End Of Oak Street, Mitchell shared exciting details about the highly anticipated next chapter.

Speaking to Empire, the director confirmed that many key collaborators are returning: "Maika is coming back for this one, as are cinematographer Mike Gioulakis and editor Julio C. Perez IV."

There's another return to be excited about: "Disasterpeace is doing the music," says Mitchell. It Follows's synth-heavy score was a crucial part of the film's atmosphere, evoking the John Carpenter classics of the '70s and '80s.

"I wouldn't want to make a sequel without him," Mitchell says of Disasterpeace. "That first film owes so much to his incredible score; I'm excited to see what he does this time." The composer, also known as Richard Vreeland, also scored Mitchell's mind-bending film Under The Silver Lake — with a sound completely different from It Follows. So no one can predict what he'll cook up this time.

As for the plot of They Follow, the director isn't showing his cards, though the film is expected to begin shooting in the not-too-distant future. "I'm really happy with the script," says Mitchell. "It's something quite connected to the first film, yet its own thing. It's going to be really fun; it's doing something cool."

Let the existential dread begin anew.
