Rupert Grint Is Returning To Harry Potter As Ron Weasley In The Cursed Child

It's nearly September, which means school's back — and that's true for Rupert Grint, too, who has confirmed he'll be heading back to Hogwarts. From 2001 onwards, Grint spent a decade of his life playing young wizard Ron Weasley in the Harry Potter movies. Now, like Tom Felton (aka Draco Malfoy) before him, Grint has announced that he'll reprise his childhood role in adult form in the stage play Harry Potter And The Cursed Child on Broadway.

The show, which originated in the West End where it is still performed, features a grown-up Harry, Ron and Hermione, with a plot that largely focuses on their children as they enrol at Hogwarts and face a time-twisting evil. Ron, now 38, is a dad ushering his daughter with Hermione, Rose, onto the Hogwarts Express.

"Ron Weasley has been a part of me since I was 11 years old and I can't wait to meet him again in this stage of life," Grint said in a statement. "There is something so full-circle and so special about stepping back into Ron's shoes now when we are both fathers; it is somehow both very familiar and completely new. And the joy of being back on Broadway, this time in a role that defined so much of my life, is truly exciting."

Grint will star as Ron from February 2027 for a 17-week engagement. Tom Felton is currently appearing on Broadway as Draco Malfoy, expected to play the role until January 3, 2027 — it remains to be seen whether his tenure will be extended to cross over with Grint's. Meanwhile, the role of Ron in HBO's Harry Potter series has been taken on by newcomer Alastair Stout.
