"Spider-Man: Brand New Day" Is Tom Holland's Best Spider-Man Movie Yet

According to San Francisco Chronicle critic Mick LaSalle, Destin Daniel Cretton's film ties together every thread of Holland's trilogy and moves the franchise to a place that's both more emotional and more fun.

According to Mick LaSalle's review in the San Francisco Chronicle, 'Spider-Man: Brand New Day' is the best of Tom Holland's Spider-Man films. That's not because of a flashy final battle or surprise cameos, but because the film dares to treat Peter Parker once again as an ordinary, fragile, and lonely young man.

Erased from everyone's memory at the end of 'No Way Home,' Peter can no longer lean on a team or a family. Cretton builds this rock-bottom moment like a story of loss: the central question becomes not the hero's power, but who he's fighting for. As LaSalle points out, for the first time the franchise functions more like a coming-of-age story than superhero mythology.

Holland's performance is mature enough to carry that tone. The action scenes avoid unnecessary CGI clutter, the humor arises organically from character, and the film's New York feels concrete, crowded and familiar again.

The result is a solid antidote to Marvel's late-stage formula fatigue: a surprisingly emotional summer movie capable of satisfying both comic-book readers and audiences burned out on superhero films.
