Juliette Lewis Apologized to Audiences After a "Cape Fear" Screening: "It Was Really Uncomfortable"
Juliette Lewis, who played Danielle Bowden in the 1991 film, returns in the Apple TV+ series as the mysterious masked character Crystal. Rewatching Scorsese's film with audiences years later, her first instinct was to apologize.

Juliette Lewis joined Amy Adams and Javier Bardem in a surprise supporting role in Apple TV+'s new adaptation of John D. MacDonald's novel 'The Executioners.' The finale of the 10-episode series aired on July 31.
Lewis occupies a unique place in adaptation history: she played Sam Bowden's (Nick Nolte) teenage daughter Danielle in Martin Scorsese's 1991 film; now, in the series, she plays an entirely different character, Crystal. The character first appeared with her face hidden behind a mask; the actor's identity was revealed when the mask came off in episode 3.
Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Lewis described her reaction to rewatching Scorsese's film at a screening and Q&A event: "The first thing I did was apologize to the audience, because it was so uncomfortable," she says, laughing. "'I'm sorry!'"
Her involvement in the series stems from a prior connection: she worked with showrunner Nick Antosca on an episode of 'The Act.' "We had a conversation around 2019, and that's when he first told me about Cape Fear as a possible show," says Lewis. When she heard Amy Adams and Bardem had joined the cast, she sent Antosca a friendly email; two days later, a role offer came in — one kept secret as a surprise.
Keeping it under wraps was the hardest part: "It was really hard. We worked hard at it. They didn't put my name in the credits." The actor also changed her voice for the role and agreed to stay hidden behind the mask in the character's early scenes. She knew this twist, which brings her face-to-face with Max Cady, would be exciting for viewers given the history involved.
