"Clueless" Sequel Series Gets the Green Light from Paramount+ with Alicia Silverstone
The sequel to Amy Heckerling's '90s classic, coming 31 years later, has been greenlit at Paramount+: Cher Horowitz is coming back, this time as the mother of a teenager.
Cher Horowitz is officially coming back. 31 years after Amy Heckerling made 'Clueless,' considered one of the greatest teen movies of all time, the long-discussed sequel series has found a home and a greenlight at Paramount+, according to Deadline. What's more, Alicia Silverstone is returning as everyone's favorite meddling but well-meaning Beverly Hills girl.
Behind the project are The O.C. creator Josh Schwartz, O.C. co-writer and Gossip Girl co-creator Stephanie Savage, and Jordan Weiss. In development in various forms since 2019, the project will take the shape of an event-style miniseries, once again centered on Silverstone's Cher.
According to the description given to Deadline, the show is set 30 years after the original film: we rejoin a Cher who has succeeded in her career and figured out motherhood — until her daughter's high school years arrive. Raising a teenager makes Cher feel "clueless" all over again.
There had previously been plans for a sequel series centered on Stacey Dash's Dionne; whether Dash or Paul Rudd from the original cast will appear in this project remains unclear.
This project is the latest link in the trend of reviving millennial-beloved brands for the streaming era: Prime Video's Legally Blonde prequel Elle, Disney+'s Malcolm In The Middle revival, and the unfortunately early-canceled Chloé Zhao-produced Buffy series are all part of the same wave. Filming is expected to begin in Los Angeles as early as next year.
