'Dutton Ranch' Season 1 Finale Left Us Hanging

'Dutton Ranch' closed out its first season with an action-packed finale full of strange reveals, though not all the pieces quite fit together. But those very gaps give season two a chance to fix things and keep the show on course. Because right now, 'Dutton Ranch' is standing on fairly shaky ground.

Throughout the season, the show deliberately withheld certain plot details. Annette Bening's Beulah has a strange phone call with someone named "Mariano" in episode 3, and in episode 7 we see a flashback of her killing her rapist — with Mariano present. In the finale, this name turns out to belong to the organized-crime figure attacking the ranch; but his motives, his history, and the true nature of his relationship with Beulah are still not adequately explained.

The action sequence recalls the best traditions of the 'Yellowstone' universe: sweeping wide shots, truck convoys, a fierce shootout. Kelly Reilly's performance — able to shatter the silent wall Beulah has built around herself with a single glance — remains the season's true anchor. But most of the supporting characters haven't been developed enough to carry the emotional weight of the finale.

A note for season two: what 'Dutton Ranch' needs right now isn't bigger set pieces, but writing that pays more respect to its characters' histories. Mariano simply being "bad" isn't enough motivation if we don't know who he is. There's hope things will course-correct, but this time, the show can't afford to fall into the trap it built for itself.
