End of an Era: 'Gilmore Girls' Leaves Netflix for Prime Video

An era has come to an end. Netflix's 12-year staple comfort show 'Gilmore Girls' has moved to Prime Video. The 2016 sequel series 'Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life' will remain on Netflix; but the original seven seasons now sit on another platform's shelves.

In the show, Lauren Graham plays sharp-tongued Lorelai, while Alexis Bledel plays her diligent daughter Rory. The story of a mother and daughter "growing up" together in a small, quirky town interweaves Lorelai's young motherhood with Rory's high school and college years. Every supporting character is a cult favorite in their own right: Luke, whom Lorelai finally ends up with; her best friend Sookie; and the town's oddball, Kirk. The friends, rivals, and love interests who appear during Rory's school years add another layer to the show.

The show was beloved when it originally aired, but it's arguably even more popular now. Viewers especially love curling up with it in the fall: since the story's most beautiful moments are set in that season, it becomes a warm, comforting companion that helps dissolve the melancholy.

Shortly after 'Gilmore Girls' arrived on Netflix in 2014, the platform announced the four-episode, 90-minutes-each miniseries 'A Year in the Life.' Set roughly nine years after the original finale, this sequel installment will remain on Netflix. On the ancillary content front, there's still talk of the documentary 'Searching for Stars Hollow,' announced by Ink On Paper Studios for the show's 25th anniversary, though no release date has been set.
