"House of the Dragon" Director Breaks Down Sunfyre's Return and the Dreamfyre Surprise
The penultimate episode of season 3 delivered two major dragon surprises: the return of Sunfyre, presumed dead, and the first appearance of Dreamfyre, bonded to Helaena. Director Nina Lopez-Corrado explains what went into the scenes.

The penultimate episode of 'House of the Dragon' propelled the story forward almost entirely through its dragons. For the first time in the show's history, Dreamfyre, bonded to Helaena (Phia Saban), emerged from behind the scenes; we also saw Caraxes, Syrax, and Seasmoke face off against Sheepstealer. But none of it made as big an impact as the return of Sunfyre, who was thought to have been left to rot in the woods near Rook's Rest.
When Aegon (Tom Glynn-Carney) learns from Tom Tangletongue that Rhaenyra's men are on their way, he's left with two choices: find a new escape route, or stay and die a hero. He chooses the latter. As Larys abandons him, Tyland chooses to stay by his king's side — and Sunfyre returns at the exact moment Aegon needs him most.
Episode director Nina Lopez-Corrado describes the dragon's survival, having been badly wounded in the Battle of Rook's Rest, as a choice rooted in the recovery process from the books: Sunfyre never fully returns to his former self, fighting on maimed and wounded. According to the director, this mirrors Aegon's own bodily decline.
The long-awaited appearance of Dreamfyre marks another threshold as the show heads toward its finale: this scene, following Alys Rivers' hidden clutch of eggs and Helaena's bond, is a clear setup for how the dragons will shift the balance of power in the season's closing chapters.
