Why Is Everyone Locked Into Hulu's New Series "Furious"?

The new crime drama Furious continues to make waves among critics. Streaming on Disney+ in Canada, the show follows two women on opposite ends of the law: a serial killer targeting powerful men, and the FBI agent assigned to find her.

On CBC's culture program Commotion, Vulture TV critic Roxana Hadadi and Variety TV critic Alison Herman answered guest host Amil Niazi's questions: why have viewers become so attached to this show, and what exactly does it have to say about women's anger?

At the center of the discussion was how post-Epstein television has changed. According to the critics, Furious channels a collective frustration over the impunity of powerful men directly into a revenge fantasy — but it does so without moralizing or fully justifying the violence. While the show makes the killer's motivations understandable, it doesn't hide that the agent chasing her carries a similar rage of her own — the real tension comes from just how alike these two women are.

The eight-episode structure also works in its favor: instead of dragging out the plot, the show keeps a tight pace while still leaving room for character moments. The performances by Riley Vinson and Lola Petticrew keep the tension alive even in the quiet of domestic scenes, as in the episode titled "My Life Had Stood - A Loaded Gun."

The critics' shared conclusion is this: Furious isn't just a well-constructed chase story; it also brings along a timely conversation about when anger is considered legitimate for women, and when it's deemed "too much." That's largely why it's being cited among the best new dramas of the year.
