Jenna Ortega Breaks Down Sabrina Carpenter's "Taste" Video: "None of It Was Choreographed"
Ortega revealed she joined the bloody, over-the-top camp classic "Taste" video just a few days before shooting: "I swear nothing was planned, we were just running around."
The video for Sabrina Carpenter's "Taste," the lead single from her album Short n' Sweet, holds a special place in the singer's cinematic universe largely thanks to her co-star Jenna Ortega. The unkillable duo chase each other with machetes, rifles, and chainsaws in a wildly campy send-up of classics like Death Becomes Her.
Given how many times they kill each other over the course of the three-minute clip, fans might assume this bloody spectacle took weeks to plan. In reality, Ortega revealed she only found out she'd be involved in the shoot a few days beforehand.
"I swear, none of that video was choreographed. We were just running around. We didn't have time to prep or talk about it," Ortega told Esquire. The actress pointed to the scene where she kisses her boyfriend, who then transforms into Carpenter, as an example; in that scene Ortega saws Carpenter in half with a pink chainsaw.
"The kissing sequence was: I was standing there, kissing a guy. They told me not to break position. Sabrina comes in, kisses me, and we did that a few times," Ortega recalled. "So it was kind of like a lovers' carousel."
Asked about her favorite scene with Carpenter, the Wednesday star's answer was clear: "The chainsaw sequence. It just felt so campy and fun, and we were wearing cute outfits, too." Ortega added that even the chainsaw had a wild name that referenced Carpenter.
