Amon Amarth Announce New Album With the Thunderous "Gjallarhorn"

After delivering a campfire-scented acoustic anthem earlier this summer, Amon Amarth are cranking the volume back up to full. The Viking-metal stalwarts have announced their new epic album 'The Allfather Awakens' and raised their horns with new single "Gjallarhorn."

The album's opening track tears through the sky with classic guitar harmonies, a galloping tempo, and deeply chanted "whoa"s. Vocalist Johan Hegg tells a chilling story about the Norse god Odin, described in the announcement as "the god of war, wisdom, death, magic, and poetry."

The track follows the recently released acoustic song "Upphaf" and last year's single "We Rule the Waves." All three appear on the 10-song album. The band says this 13th full-length, following 2022's 'The Great Heathen Army,' is not a concept album but rather "a collection of epic, history-inspired stories about conflict and sacrifice for a greater good."

The "Gjallarhorn" video retells Odin's quest for wisdom: the god sacrificing his own eye "in exchange for cosmic insight that would shape the fate of gods and men."

The album was recorded across two separate sessions at producer Jacob Hansen's studio in Denmark. "Each time we worked on one song and made that song as good as it could be," says guitarist Olavi Mikkonen. "Then we recorded each track completely — drums, guitars, and vocals — before moving on to the next."

'The Allfather Awakens' arrives Oct. 2 via Metal Blade. The band has also announced that its upcoming European shows will feature "a brand-new stage production inspired by Odin's legendary Golden Hall."
