The 3 Best Movies on HBO Max This Week: 'Mask of the Phantasm', 'Evil Dead II', and 'Legally Blonde'
In a TV week full of Emmy nominations, HBO Max also makes a strong case for movie buffs with a Batman animated masterpiece, a horror classic, and one of the best comedies of the 2000s.

It's a big TV week with Emmy nominations just announced. But HBO Max is also full of titles that will make movie lovers happy. This week, you can check out one of the best DC films of all time, a horror classic, and an excellent comedy from the early 2000s.
"Batman: Mask of the Phantasm"
Anyone who even considers themselves a passive Batman fan should give this feature-length adventure set in the 'Batman: The Animated Series' universe a chance. Featuring the iconic Batman/Joker duo of Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill, the film focuses on Bruce Wayne confronting a figure from his past, Andrea Beaumont (Dana Delany), whom he once loved enough to consider giving up the cape. The scene where Bruce visits his parents' grave is one of the character's most emotional moments on screen.
"Evil Dead II"
A new 'Evil Dead' film, directed by Sébastien Vaniček, is released on Friday. These films have managed to stay strong from the beginning, but Sam Raimi's first two productions remain the greatest examples of 'cabin in the woods' horror. The increased element of dark humor in the second film (without ever softening the horror) is the icing on the cake. This splatter feast starring Bruce Campbell is terrifying, brutal, and extremely entertaining.
"Legally Blonde"
Whatever you think of Prime Video's prequel series 'Elle', returning to 'Legally Blonde' is always a good idea. Directed by Robert Luketic and written by Karen McCullah Lutz and Kirsten Smith, the film is a funny and thought-provoking work about a woman (Reese Witherspoon) who climbs the legal ladder at Harvard, proving her detractors wrong. One of Witherspoon's best performances and one of the best comedies of the 2000s.
