3 Non-Spider-Man Tom Holland Movies to Watch Before Brand New Day
Tom Holland, the MCU's sole Spider-Man for a decade, is an actor far beyond the web-slinger. The Empire team picked his top three non-Spidey films.
His name is Tom Holland, and for the past decade, he's been the Marvel Cinematic Universe's sole Spider-Man — soon to return with Spider-Man: Brand New Day. But while the world knows him best as the friendly neighborhood superhero, there's much more to the British star than Peter Parker. While we continue to admire his work in The Odyssey, Empire's experts dug through the archives to pick his top three non-Spidey films.
The Impossible (2012) — J.A. Bayona
A younger Tom Holland, closer to his Billy Elliot days, stars in the true story of a British family caught in the Boxing Day tsunami that hit Thailand in 2004. In Bayona's hands, the film is both breathtaking and exhaustingly harrowing: the physical horror of the disaster and a family's struggle to find each other coexist in the same scene. Holland's maturity here is the first evidence of the dramatic weight he would carry years later.
The Lost City Of Z (2016) — James Gray
The story of explorer Percy Fawcett, who pursues a lost civilization in the Amazon; Holland plays his son, who views his father's obsession with deep resentment, then slowly begins to see the world through his eyes. It's an old-fashioned epic of a kind rarely made anymore, capturing the beauty of discovery as much as the disease, starvation, and brutal climate. The duo of Hunnam and Holland is convincing; it's also the first film where Holland and Robert Pattinson are in the same frame.
The Devil All The Time (2020) — Antonio Campos
Despite opening with a disaster movie, starring in half a dozen MCU films, and flexing his dramatic muscles in a James Gray film, it was Campos's pitch-black Southern Gothic gem that shattered the audience's perception of "forever young" Tom Holland. In Holland's Arvin Russell, violence, intensity, and pervasive darkness coexist: a young man willing to do the unspeakable to avenge the unspeakable in a lawless town at the mercy of false faith leaders and serial killers. On top of that, there's a wildly unhinged Robert Pattinson as a predatory preacher.
