Game of Thrones' Top 10 Moments: Not the Grand Battles, But the Silences Before the Storm

Giddy Up America's selection sets aside the show's massive set pieces and focuses on those small moments of tension before the explosion — from barking dogs to Roose Bolton's armor, to that look on Littlefinger's face.

Game of Thrones' Top 10 Moments: Not the Grand Battles, But the Silences Before the Storm

It's not easy to talk about the legacy of Game of Thrones: on one hand, epic battles, shocking deaths, and breathtaking episodes; on the other, a rushed finale that contradicted everything that came before it. But the list maker's suggestion is this: the show's true power lies in those small moments before the storm. The fireworks were what stuck in memory, but what truly hit home was often the silence just before the explosion.

10. The Mountain trips Oberyn's leg — "The Mountain and the Viper" (S4, E8)

The Prince of Dorne, who arrived in Westeros after the Red Wedding, almost pulled off a surprise as Tyrion's champion. But our man started celebrating five meters too early — a rookie mistake. When he wasn't looking, the Mountain took his eyes, then his skull. Watching the sudden demise of a fresh, new character and a potential force against the Lannisters was a difficult scene.

9. Jon watches Rickon die — "Battle of the Bastards" (S6, E9)

Second lesson: don't run in a straight line from a psychopath. Rickon took the arrow in his back, and Jon threw his carefully laid plan out the window, attacking Ramsay's army alone. Jon, who had seemed cold-blooded since his resurrection, giving in to his emotions was both surprising and a move perfectly fitting for him.

8. Littlefinger realizes his turn has come — "The Dragon and the Wolf" (S7, E7)

The reunion of the Stark siblings in the seventh season didn't deliver as expected; the tension between Sansa and Arya exhausted the audience. Then both of them fooled us, and Littlefinger too. The expression on the face of the man who had been scheming in the shadows for seven seasons, when he realized that it was he, not Arya, who was being judged, is one of the most satisfying frames of the series.

7. Margaery suspects Cersei won't come to her trial — "The Winds of Winter" (S6, E10)

The Sparrows had taken over Westeros's mind, and everyone had come to Cersei's trial — everyone except Cersei. Margaery saw the danger that the High Sparrow didn't and tried to get everyone out of there. She wasn't listened to. Then they all died. Except Cersei.

6. Tormund learns Brienne isn't a knight — "A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms" (S8, E2)

Those who live outside a system are best at seeing its flaws. Jaime knighting Brienne was the most poignant moment of the flawed eighth season; but Tormund's "Why isn't Brienne a knight?" reaction was the real clincher.

5. Night's Watch rangers find the bodies left by the White Walkers — "Winter is Coming" (S1, E1)

The series didn't open with the Starks, the Lannisters, or dragons, but with meticulously arranged bodies north of the Wall and a Wight. This was the path the producers chose to start the show — even if the story went elsewhere afterward, it's one of the best ways to open a series.

4. Daenerys tricks the slave trader while buying the Unsullied — "And Now His Watch Has Ended" (S3, E4)

We had learned in the first two seasons that Daenerys was not to be underestimated: she was someone who walked into fire and emerged with three dragon hatchlings. But the moment she seemed willing to give a dragon in exchange for the Unsullied, and then the trick she played on the trader, became the scene that permanently cemented her reputation.

3. Catelyn Stark sees Roose Bolton's armor and understands what happened at the Twins — "The Rains of Castamere" (S3, E9)

We were all in shock at the Red Wedding; Catelyn wasn't. The moment she made eye contact with Roose and confirmed the betrayal was a detail that becomes much clearer on a second viewing: everything happens so fast and darkly that it's missed the first time. Lesson: listen to your mother.

2. Dogs start barking at Hardhome — "Hardhome" (S5, E8)

The list maker's favorite battle. The last twenty minutes are like a horror-action movie: everything seems to be going to plan when the dogs start barking, the wind turns, the command "Close the gates!" comes, and each time someone doesn't make it to the gate. Then the Night King looks at Jon and raises the dead: the moment the show said, "we're not kidding."

1. Daenerys sails for Westeros — "The Winds of Winter" (S6, E10)

Finally. After six seasons of crossing deserts, being captured, escaping death, and raising dragons, Daenerys was finally setting sail for Westeros. The show, always grand in scale, began to narrow from this moment on, stories finally started to connect — and that flowing music accompanying the fleet of ships became the series' most magnificent finale.
